Hi, my name is Emily and I am excited to trade in my scrubs and stethoscope for two weeks of clips and chamois!! In 2012, I headed West with Bike and Build's Southern US route and have been itching to hit the road again.
I, like so many other riders, can separate my life into two parts: Life Before B&B and Life After B&B. This once in a lifetime trip restored my faith in humanity. Churches opened their doors, random strangers pulled over to offer cold beverages and rides to local bike shops, families could not be more proud while working off their sweat equity hours and locals took a vested interest in the issue of affordable housing. Subsequently, many hosts and volunteers said their faith was restored in young adults once they learned riders were willing to give up their summer and give back to a community, even if they had no personal ties to it.
In my post B&B life I volunteer with affordable housing agencies and spread the word about the amazing work being done by Bike and Build riders and alumni. Over the last two years I have served as the DC City Captain planning potlucks, build opportunities and rides for new and alumni riders in the DMV area.
Some fun facts about me: I first learned about the affordable housing crisis as an undergraduate volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, I served as an AmeriCorps volunteer with the Pittsburgh Health Corps, my bike's name is Bernard, I documented our trip West through a series of dance videos (and will do that again this year), I could argue I am the fastest tube changer East of the Mississippi, I loathe Cliff Bars and Blue (Gatorade) can turn any bad day around.
While the temperatures will be cooler and the scenery a little more green, I am excited to hit the road with Drift West and Bernard, serve as an affordable housing advocate and meet some amazing people along the way.
