Another build day here folks; sadly we are about half way through only our NOLA trip, but also with our build days (lots of biking and few rest days ahead). Our group started up base boards and shoe molding and thankfully we were once again killing it. To make our work more efficient Aren came up with the idea of making a map, measuring the walls, cutting everything at once and then bringing it into the house. Let me tell you we were nailing it!! (hehehe)
All the work in the 100 degree weather made for some very tired builders, especially after lunch. Some of us headed to McDonalds to take full advantage of the AC and iced coffee.
So I am not sure how we found the couple who provided us dinner, but they were fantastic (let's be honest, we have not had a bad host yet). Chip and Bonnie have lived in their current residence for 26 and thankfully their area was spared from the flooding. Chip is an avid cyclist and very involved with the local Habitat community and Bonnie sits on the board at the United Way who gave the grant money to the owner of the house we are working on. It was great getting to know them and hearing thier view of pre and post Katrina; we also had a very candid of the positive and negative sides of gentrification.
Dinner was homemade gumbo and some local beer so the 21+ crowd ws definitely in heaven. This combined with dinner in a much cooler outside environment and my feet in the grass made for a great night They also had a pool which many of us took advantage of - I got probably what will be one of my favorite dance videos tonight as well.
